Name? Devin Hogan
Birthday? 8/14/NYB (take a guess if you like)
Band you are currently in? Double Shot
Other bands have you been in? Banned in Boston, Band of Brothers, Band of Gypsies (yeah right), Band–Aid,
Ban–De–Sole, Band on the Run. (Should I stop now?)
What instrument do you play? Guitar – that’s all (for now). Though some would say I shouldn’t call what I do
with it playing.
Talk about your gear, favorite instruments, why you like or use certain things. Electric: ’97 Fender
American Strat. Bought used. Sort of leapt out at me. Being in a cover band that plays music from each of five
decades you need to have something versatile. The Strat is that – not that you couldn’t do it with other
guitars. Along those lines - Dear Santa, would love to have one each: a Tele, Les Paul, ES 335, another Strat
with a rosewood fingerboard and a humbucker in the bridge position.
Acoustic: Larivee 6-string
Amps: Recent acquisition - Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue – my regular gig rig. Fender Princeton Chorus (for
sale).
I aspire to someday own as much gear as my band mates Jim Burger and Ed Strauss.
Age you started playing? 5th grade, I think. Took classical guitar at Cleveland Music School Settlement. Got
my first guitar (a Stella Harmony) for those lessons at Difiorie’s.
Influences? All my favorites that I grew up listening to when rock & roll radio was king in Cleveland - Keith
Richards, Mick Taylor, Dave Gilmore, George Harrison, Mike Campbell, Pete Townsend, Clapton, Don Felder,
Ringo Starr (Hey, I always wanted to play drums.). Some others too - Chet Atkins, Mozart and Tchaikovsky
(those two guys wrote great hooks). Keith and Neil Young influence me vocally – just ask the guys in the band.
Favorite venue to play? My patio on a summer evening.
Least favorite venue to play? Madison Square Basement (too dark, cinder blocks make for bad acoustics)
Music or artist you really like to listen to? I’m a big fan of The Stones, Beatles and Zep (in that order). But
I listen to just about everything. I’ve got XM in the car. It’s like being a kid in a candy store.
New music or artist you like? Like a lot of folks of my generation I think a lot of the popular music out there
is, well, out there. However, there’s a few that have caught my attention (with some thanks to my daughter). I
like – Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Train, Maroon Five, White Stripes, Five for Fighting, Jack Johnson,
and The Chili Peppers. I think Christine Aguilera has a great voice too.
Five CDs you can’t live without?
Exile on Main Street (Stones)
Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out (Stones)
Meet the Beatles (Beatles)
Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin)
My Double Shot practice CD #1 (a little of everything on there)
Most embarrassing thing in your CD collection? My daughter stuck her Baja Men CD in there. It’s not mine –
I swear.
Favorite movies? Mostly comedies – Blazing Saddles, Animal House, Young Frankenstein, Raising Arizona,
Naked Gun, any Marx Bros. But I like dramas too - Sling Blade (great acting), any Hitchcock flick, Butch
Cassidy, The Sting, The Godfather.
Favorite television shows? Jim says I’m not allowed to watch TV, because I’m supposed to be practicing. But
when I get to, it’s usually Rescue Me, Raymond or Tribe baseball. However, Dwayne has me intrigued about
Rachel Ray.
Your last meal on earth? Oysters Rockefeller appetizer from Pier W accompanied by a Chivas on the rocks,
king crab legs and filet mignon from Ruth’s Chris, my grandmother’s red raspberry pie for dessert.
Do you collect anything? Dust.
Book that everyone should read? Well everyone should read The Bible, but for something lighter – Jurassic
Park is still the best novel I’ve ever read. I’ve been reading James Patterson lately.
What’s in your CD player right now? Vol. 4 (Black Sabbath), Sheryl Crowe’s Greatest Hits, Rarities 1973-
2003 (Stones), LA Woman (Doors), Rock-n-Roll Animal (Lou Reed), Soundtrack from O Brother Where Art
Thou.
First cut on your dream mix CD? Toss-up: Honky Tonk Women or Tumbling Dice.
What do you do in your day job? Engineer by trade, project manager by profession. Working for a west side
designer/manufacturer of capital equipment for the steel industry.
Relate a funny or outrageous story from a gig. Me breaking strings or kicking cables out on my equipment
keeps the band in stitches and causes outrage for me.
Most unusual request while playing out? In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
Most tiresome request while playing out? ”Could ya please turn it down?” - more of a demand than request.
And that “Freebird” guy shows up at our gigs a lot, too.
If you went to hell, what song would be played over and over? Either “Celebration” (Kool & the Gang) or
“Tainted Love” (Soft Cell) - which means they’ll both be on our “to learn” list next week.
People who don’t know me well wouldn’t know that I……? am more Slovak (50%) than Irish. With a name like
Devin Hogan, who would know that?"

Welcome to Spotlight!
....the opportunity for local musicians to be placed front and center. Enjoy the show!
The fourth installment of Spotlight features Devin Hogan, a fabulous guitar player
currently in the classic rock cover band Double Shot. Despite being a newcomer to
the cover band scene, he puts on an unforgettable show, and can play with the best.
He has a great sense of humor, as you can see in the interview. Be sure to check
out Double Shot at their next gig. These guys are simply the best!

How did you end up in your current band? Long
story - Scott Cutlip (former Moxie bass player – that
fact unknown to me at the time) and I were in the
same engineering program, going to school at night. As
we were finally coming down the home stretch after
MANY years together we were ruminating one night
about what the heck we were going to with all of our
spare time, since we would soon have no homework to
do. I told him besides re-introducing myself to my
wife and daughter, that I’d been having this urge to
renew my relationship with the guitar. He said “I
used to play bass in a band, and I’ve been thinking the
same thing.” It wasn’t long after that we were
jamming at his friend and former band mate Jim
Burger’s (ex-Moxie) house. They invited me to sit in
for a song or two at Scott’s annual Cabin Fever
charity bash. I was so nervous I had an out-of-body
experience. I was watching the band play while I was
in the band!! (I think I saw Rod Serling there off to
the side). That was all it took for me. And the rest,
as they say, is history.

Pedals: Too many – I’m considering a tap dancing
career. But, again, I’ve got a lot of ground to cover
(and a lot of mistakes to hide.) Chain: MXR Dynacomp,
Cry Baby Wah, Boss SD1 overdrive, Boss OS2
OD/Distortion, Boss DS1 Distortion. I also have a
Boss CH1 Chorus and DD3 Delay. I run those two
through the effects loop on the BDR.
Favorite local artist? A bunch– but My Three Sons are tops.
So are the guys in Double Shot. The chemistry of this band,
both musically and personally, is remarkable. Most of those
guys listed as my influences were influenced by the blues
and R & B. I love the blues. Lots of great people playing the
blues in this area to see - Frankie Starr, Colin Dussault,
Walkin’ Cane, Mary Bridget-Davies, Armstrong-Bearcat,
Becky Boyd to name a few.
Who are your heroes? I assume you mean my guitar heroes.
Pretty much those guys listed under my influences plus a nod to
a couple local guys Dwayne Dickman – best overall player in town
who has taken the time to share some of his vast knowledge,
and Frankie Starr – best blues player in town. Both good people
too.
