Welcome to Spotlight!
........the opportunity for local musicians to be placed front and center. Enjoy the show!
The second issue of Spotlight features Dwayne Dickman, an extremely talented and versatile musician who can
do it all. I've had the pleasure of seeing him play guitar, bass, keys and drums all in one night. He's got an
incredible voice with dynamic range. It's a real treat seeing him at My Three Sons gigs, with their silky three-
part harmonies and flawless music. Watching Dwayne play the guitar was inspirational enough to get me playing
again. He's been tremendously supportive, and I am fortunate to call him a friend.
What is your name? Dwayne Allen Dickman
When is your birthday? 11/04/69
What bands are you currently in? My Three Sons and The Jerry Bruno Orchestra
How did you end up in your current band? Serendipity really. Both of those bands were losing their
guitarists at nearly the same time. I had played a couple of tunes with Sam Romano at a gig of his and he was
the drummer with both bands. He kindly recommended me for the positions. Out of desperation I guess I was
accepted. The guys I replaced were enormously talented.
What instruments do you play? Guitar is my main focus. Let's just say I own a bass, keyboards, and a drum
kit. To say I play them would be borderline perjury.
Talk about your gear, favorite instruments, why you like or use certain things. I play a Strat through a
Fender Twin with a couple of Boss pedals. Nothing elaborate. I like the Strat because it seems the most
versatile instrument out there. In the Jerry Bruno Orchestra we have to play everything from jazz to R&B to
pop and rock and you can get tones that approximate all those styles if you choose the right pickups and roll the
knobs correctly....
At what age did you start playing? I was 13.
Who are some of your influences? Just like everyone I guess I just picked up tunes from the radio. I had no
specific genre or style that did it for me. I liked everything from the Bee Gees to The Platters. As I got more
serious I got into Steely Dan and other stuff with some cool chord changes. Nowdays I'd have to say I'm
mostly influenced by the guys I play with in both bands. They are all real pros. Some have music degrees, some
have 30 years experience, all have amazing chops.
Name five CDs you can't live without: Damn that's a hard question. Very hard. Here's what comes to mind.
1. Foxtrot-Genesis (Primarily for Supper's Ready. Great playing all around. If you don't get chills you're not
human.)
2. Toy Matinee-Toy Matinee (I know nobody knows who this is but it's a brilliant record. Full of
heartbreakingly sad lyrics. Probably the second best sounding record I know of.)
3. Aja-Steely Dan (People just don't write like this. This is not three chord rock. The title track is
astounding. The best sounding record I've ever heard.)
4. Spilt Milk-Jellyfish (Another band no one knows but that's why I love it. I didn't get burned out by radio
play. A very ambitious record. Great vocals, incredible arrangements, and super clever lyrics.)
5. The Nightfly-Donald Fagen (Because I can't get enough of that kind of writing. Chord changes man. Lots
and lots of chord changes. Keeps the ears interested. Plus the piano intro to Maxine never gets old to me.)
What is your favorite venue to play? Anywhere that'll have us! With My Three Sons probably the Parma
Tavern because they've always been good to us. With the Jerry Bruno Orchestra the Renaissance downtown.
Nice and close.
What is your least favorite venue to play? I couldn't really say. I'm being political.
What music or artist do you really like to listen to? Anything really. Mostly obscure guys though. Kevin
Gilbert and Chris Thile are two guys I really like. But you know, Steely Dan, Genesis, Supertramp, Stevie
Wonder ...jazzy guys are cool too. Danny Gatton, Chick Corea, Diana Krall, Kenny Burrell...
What are some of your favorite movies? Off the top of my head? The Godfather, JFK, Rear Window,
Amadeus, Dog Day Afternoon ...I love directors like Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, Oliver Stone, Milos Forman, and
recently David Fincher.
What are your favorite television shows? Jeopardy rules!! 30 Minute Meals because I'm in love with Rachel
Ray. When she bends over to get into the stove... Inside the Actor's Studio because I could watch James
Lipton smooch butt all day. When he gets someone who has done no good work and has to sustain an hour
interview..."Lindsay Lohan, how did you get into character for Parent Trap?"
What is your favorite food? Cheese, cheese, cheese. I could eat a doormat if it had some muenster melted
on it.
What are your favorite books/authors? Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi is great nonfiction. As detailed
and well researched as I can imagine anything being. In fiction I'd have to say Michael Connelly, John Sandford,
and Dennis Lehane.
What’s in your CD player right now? Probably Ambrosia's anthology. Or it could be Shelley Duvall singing "He
Needs Me" from the Popeye soundtrack!
What do you do in your day job? My day job is hard to describe. Let's just say I keep my pimp hand strong.
Alright, that's a lie. I'm a house husband.
Relate a funny or outrageous story from a gig. Good grief... Okay, there was this time when a horse walked
into the bar and the bartender said "Buddy, why the long face?"
What’s the most unusual request you have had while playing out? The only thing that comes to mind is that
a few times people will request us doing songs by female artists. As if we could sing that high.
What’s the most tiresome request you have had while playing out? Could you please leave? That one really
hurts.
People who don’t know me wouldn’t know that I……? Exist.

What other bands have you been in? I guess the
most notable band was the Fortunes. They were a
British group that had some success in the early '70's
that still play the casino/hotel circuit. Strangely, they
were desperate for a guitarist also!! Locally I was in
Crossroads and Moondawg with my great high school
buds Ross Safos and Tom Becker.
Who is your favorite local artist? Although I don't get
out to see many bands, I like going to see bands my
friends are in like Double Shot or the guys at the
Lampliter Jams. My Old School, Ed Sarley, and Billy
Sullivan are cool. I haven't seen Mike Starcher's band
but I've played with him and he does a great job. I've
played with Twist and like those guys too. Lynn, their
singer is great. I hope I'm not forgetting anyone but I'm
sure I am.
What new music or artist do you like? I'm not too hip to
new stuff but I like that song about the Horse and the
Cherry Tree. Who does that? John Mayer's good. Oh yeah, I
like Kelly Clarkson.
Who are your heroes? The
underdog, whoever that may
be. Anyone who overcomes the
odds or at least tries to
overcome the odds no matter
what.
