Name? Jim Burger Birthday? August 24, 1959
The strange thing is that it really did not take as long as I thought it would. I had played with Devin Hogan (lead guitarist in Double Shot) for about a year or so, and that’s where it started. I called Ed Strauss (aka Spyder, bassist in Double Shot), who I had played with in 1979, and suckered him into my evil plan. Now I have two nice guys to work with. Sammy Romano recommended we talk to Rob Garuccio. He’ s a great drummer and a nice guy as well. We started as a four-piece band. By some fluke of nature, Rob’s wife Becky worked with George Yunis. Rob came to rehearsal one day and asked if I knew him. George was always my favorite singer. He agreed to sing at a benefit with us, and wound up staying. I’ve played in a few bands in my time, and they’ve all been fun. But nothing like this one. I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had playing with some of the nicest guys around. They are a hoot.
Age you started playing? Another loaded question. I’m quite sure my band mates would like to answer this one. I’m not really sure when I got my first guitar, maybe 11 or 12. I attempted to take some lessons in the 1980’s . That lasted for two lessons. I’ d already been playing out for some time, and you’ve heard about the old dog and new tricks. Technically I’ve had 1 hour of guitar lessons. My mother was an accomplished piano player who tried to teach me as well as my brother and sisters, but none us would sit still for any of it. If I could rewind back, I’d do it the right way, that’s for sure. I was in the high school band for a short time, playing the trumpet. The band director felt I’d do better in study hall, and kicked me out.
Who would you like to perform with? Two of my sons are gifted guitarists. I look forward to performing with them again. Music or artist you really like to listen to? Genesis and Yes are two of my favorites, but I like a lot of 80’s music. New artist you admire? John Mayer What bands today could you see being around in 25 years? John Mayer What were your first three albums ever owned? Alex Harvey (Framed), Mott the Hoople (All the Young Dudes), and Rush’s first album. Five CDs you can’t live without? Yes Songs, Genesis (Three Sides Live), Toto’s first album, The Beatles (Revolver) & (Rubber Soul)
| Relate a funny or outrageous story from a gig. This could be a story from any given Friday or Saturday night we play. What a lot of people don’t realize is that watching the audience is very entertaining for the musicians. There’s a lot going on out there. One night I was playing a club in North Canton (the club is still open so I won’t name names). One of the customers had one (or 8) too many. Instead of escorting him out, two guys picked him up by the arms and legs, kicked open the door and threw him right out on the sidewalk. I thought I was in the old west. Now that’s entertainment.
